ROES Ordering Software on Windows
Obtaining the ROES Ordering Software
There are two different launch systems available for ROES on Windows. If you are using Windows Vista or later and have the 64-bit edition of Windows installed, it is recommended that you use the ROES Web Start launch system. This is what we label as “ROES for Windows 64-bit Systems” below. A self-contained 64-bit Java runtime will be automatically be installed as part of the ROES software.
If you do not have a 64-bit edition of Windows installed, you should instead use the Java Web Start system. This is what we label as “ROES for Windows 32-bit Systems” below. This version will require that you have already installed the Java runtime on your system and that it is working properly.
If you experience trouble using one launch system, you may attempt to use the other regardless of system type even though it is not the recommended launch system.
Trouble Launching ROES
If ROES will not install and launch, please try using the other launch system. “ROES for Windows 32-bit Systems” will run on either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows systems and will utilize whichever Java runtime has been installed, so it is sometimes helpful as a secondary launch method for 64-bit users if difficulty is experienced using the ROES Web Start launch system.
Generally, however, the ROES Web Start launch system is less problematic for the majority of users wishing to use the ROES ordering software. Likewise, the ROES Web Start launch system will technically run on either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows systems, but its operation on 32-bit systems is not well supported.
In most cases, difficulty with the launch system is caused by security software interfering with the underlying Java platform. It may be necessary to create exceptions for java.exe, javaw.exe, and javaws.exe in your security software before ROES will be allowed to run in such cases. These files may be found at “C:\Program Files\Java\jre###_##\bin\” or “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre###_##\bin\” for JWS users and “C:\ProgramData\SWRoes\JRE\bin\” for RWS users.
If you are using Java Web Start and are prompted for what program to open “launch.jnlp” with, chances are that Java has not yet been installed. It may be obtained here. If a blank Internet Explorer page or some other seemingly random application opens when opening “launch.jnlp”, it is likely that the association for jnlp files has been incorrectly set. Please save the launch.jnlp file to disk and right-click on it, choose “open with”, and click on “choose another app”. It will be necessary to direct the open dialog to your system’s copy of javaw.exe at which point ROES will begin to launch with Java.
Trouble Sending ROES Orders
As with launch issues, the leading cause of order upload trouble is security software interference. It may be necessary to create exceptions for java.exe, javaw.exe, and javaws.exe in your security software or firewall before ROES will be allowed to connect to the order receipt server. These files may be found at “C:\Program Files\Java\jre###_##\bin\” or “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre###_##\bin\” for JWS users and “C:\ProgramData\SWRoes\JRE\bin\” for RWS users.
Order uploads occur over TCP port 84. Your security software, router, and Internet service provider must not block outbound traffic on this port if order uploads are to succeed.
