Print Questions

Yes, you may obtain a custom print size by ordering the next size larger print and providing special trim instructions.  We have an array of rotary trimmers that we use to trim any size including our largest 30×120″ prints.  Please note that there is a fee of $1.00 per custom trim.

See a List of Prints & Sizes Here ›

Sample Scenario: You wish to obtain a 13×44″ custom print.  When building your order, you would select the closest available size that fits the dimensions of your custom layout (16×48″).  You should provide an image that has outside dimensions of 16×48″ while having image content measuring only 13×44″ (additional image preparation information is available below).  When completing your order, you would include a note in the Lab Instructions box requesting the custom trim for that particular order item.  Please include the original and target dimensions as well as the order item number for the item you wish to trim.  The Lab Instructions box is found in the Options panel of the View Cart window of ROES.

Sample Lab Instructions: Please trim order item 7 from 16×48″ to 13×44″. The image is centered.

Image Preparation: The goal of preparing an image for a custom print size is to generate an image file that matches the dimensions of the available print size it will be filling while cropping the real image area to fit the dimensions of the size you wish trim that available print size to.  In the case of the sample scenario above, the image has been cropped to fit to 13×44″ and then the image canvas has been resized from the center to 16×48″.  Load the desired image in an image editor such as Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.NET.  Resize the image to where the the largest dimension fully fills the largest dimension of your custom print size.  Note that if the aspect ratios of the source image and target size are different, this process may crop some of the source image.  Expand the image canvas area to where the custom print size is in the center of the larger available print size area.  The image shown below is a demonstration of what this process looks like when fitting a 13×44″ source image to a 16×48″ image to allow it to be inserted into a 16×48″ product and be properly trimmed to 13×44″.

We produce our B&W prints on the same Kodak Professional Endura paper as our color prints.

We produce quite a few B&W prints with this process, and customers have been very satisfied.  The Endura paper yields good tonal range along with good neutral blacks and grays.  We continue to test and review a variety of photographic papers and survey our customers about B&W images printed on true B&W paper as opposed to the way we are doing it now.  At the present time we do not feel the additional costs are worth the insignificant difference.

We encourage you to run several test prints of B&W images printed at Meridian.  They will be printed on Kodak Endura color paper.  We are are interested in your feedback, but at this time if you know you prefer prints on true B&W paper you will have to order those from another lab.

Below are two views of the spiked plate hanger.  The plate is driven into the back of the print with a hammer.  They cannot be removed without damaging the print.  Clear tape is added to protect walls from scratches.  One of the slots has a hollow space behind it.  Puncture the tape over the slot and hang the print on a nail placed in a wall.  If a larger opening is needed such as for a screw, insert a flat blade screwdriver in a slot and bend downward.  A larger opening will be left.

The one step picture hanging nails shown below are what we recommend for use with standouts.  They are typically rated for about 20 pounds, and we tend to only use the center hole.  These inexpensive hangers are available at most hardware stores as well as online.

Die cut wallets measure 2-5/16 x 3-5/16 inches.

Endura (the basic Luster that we refer to simply as Endura) is our default finish that we use for all professional prints, if another finish is not selected. I think most color labs serious about serving professional photographers use this paper by Kodak. It is considered a luster finish. In other words, a light semi-matte finish. So gloss and sheen are not present, yet it is sharp and bright. It exhibits vivid color with a good balance between contrast and subtle gradations for good portrait work. I think Kodak Endura Luster is the perfect balance between gloss and matte — a true professional finish that will help your work stand out from prints made by others at local one-hour labs or discount store photo finishers.

Endura Metallic is almost a special effect. It still captures good realism, but it almost has a pearlescent quality. Metallic in the base of the paper shows through to give an added dimension, especially in the lighter tones. This high reflective metallic quality shows through in a brides white dress, or the highlights and brightest colors of a sunset. It’s hard to describe, but rather needs to be seen personally with prints of your images. I strongly encourage you to make a test of both papers, using the same image, to see the differences for yourself.

The choice between the two papers we offer is purely subjective; not something we can say, “for this type of photograph, you should use Endura Luster, but anytime you shoot this type of image you should use Metallic.” The fact of the matter is we have some portrait photographers that love the look of Kodak Endura Metallic so much they print everything, proofs, enlargements and wall hanging sized prints, on it. There are also some landscape and wildlife photographers who seem to always print to Metallic. That is the reason we keep enlarging our Metallic offering to more sizes and more products. We have even perfected the processes to put Metallic on Canvas and Gallery Wrap products. On the other hand, we also have customers that have tried Metallic and have decided they do not like it, or rather, would only use it very selectively, on certain images and subject matter.

So in the end, our best suggestion is that you send a test of several images for 8×10 prints in each Endura and Endura Metallic. At only $2.19 for Metallic 8×10 and $1.69 for Endura 8×0, a test in a little larger print size (not just 4x6s) is a very inexpensive test that will serve you well.

You can read more about these two professional papers on Kodaks website here:

KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Premier Paper

KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Premier Metallic Paper

We do not offer 24×36 metallic prints because we do not stock 24 inch metallic paper.  Our closest alternative is 30 inch paper, and we believe it to be too fragile to try to cut such a large print from it.  Since we have 30 inch paper, however, we do offer 24×30 and 30×40 inch metallic prints.

Ordering Questions

No, you do not need to be a professional photographer to order from Meridian.  All customers are welcome.

  1. Open ROES and switch to the Start Ordering window after logging in.
  2. Click on the Packages and Clusters button to the left of the quantity field at the bottom of the center panel of the window.  The button looks like a stack of layers.
  3. Click on the first product you would like to be included in your package.
  4. Drag-and-drop additional products into the center panel of the window to add them to the package.
  5. Rearrange the products in the center panel until you are satisfied with their presentation on the screen.
  6. Drag-and-drop a sample image into any of the displayed products.  Use the controls at the bottom of the center panel to pan, zoom, and crop as needed.
  7. Click on the Save as New Favorite Product button to the left of the Packages and Clusters button.  The button looks like a heart with a plus sign next to it.
  8. Provide a name for the package in the “Name this Favorite” text box.
  9. Press the Enter key to complete the save process.  The package has now been saved and may be used in the future.

To produce logo prints, you will need to contact us if you have not previously filed your logo.  There is a one-time $5.00 setup fee.  Once your logo is on file, any prints ordered from the “with logo” sections will be printed with your account’s registered logo.

Due to the high volume we receive, customer orders are only stored for a short period.  However, there is a way for you to load a previous order in the ROES software.

In ROES, switch to the “Orders” window.  Once you have located the order you wish to reorder in the list, click on the “Reopen as new order” button next to it.  Provided the images are still available on your computer at the same paths as before, the order will be loaded as if it were your current order.  You may edit existing order items, remove order items you do not wish to reorder, etc as desired.  Once finished, submit the order like normal.

Please Note:  You may want to set the program’s “Remove old orders” policy to be “Always keep” if it is not currently.  This setting is found on the “Orders” window on the right side of the screen next to the orders list.

Orders typically take two business days in the lab for printing and one additional business day for each added option such as mounting, coating, or texturing.

Orders larger than about 10 GB in size will be accepted but may experience delays in processing.

Unless TIFF format images are used, orders this large are fairly uncommon.  Our recommendation is that maximum quality JPEG images be used instead due to there being no perceptible difference in printed image quality.

Color Questions

At our lab we prefer order images to be in JPEG format set to high or maximum quality.  Some customers ask about ordering with TIFF format images, but these provide no perceivable difference to print quality.  The primary difference between JPEG and TIFF is that JPEG is technically a “lossy” compressed format which uses special methods to more efficiently store visual information than a simple bitmap format such as TIFF.

In practice we find no print quality difference between an uncompressed TIFF and a JPEG compressed at maximum quality.  Using TIFF images only increases order size and thus upload time.  Orders larger than about 10 GB may experience delays in processing.

JPEG images are the standard for print orders in the professional industry.  We have tens of thousands of customers that are happy with the prints produced from them.  It is very likely that you too will be pleased with the results.  If you are concerned about the effect on print quality, we suggest that you create a few test prints and see if you are satisfied.

We recommend that you do not resize your files when placing an order.  Please send your images as their original size and in JPEG format.  If the original image is too small to satisfy our minimum print resolution guidelines, the ROES software will present a warning message when it is placed into a product (shown below).  If you receive this warning, please do not resize the image–expanding the image does not improve print quality and in fact may actually reduce print quality in addition to causing other problems.  If color correction is selected, an experienced technician will view and color correct your file by hand before it is printed.

We suggest keeping individual images smaller than 100-150 megapixels in size.  Please do not expand smaller images to larger dimensions; it will not improve print quality.  Extremely large image files may not be able to be processed at the lab and will require re-submission of the order with such images fixed.

Other Questions

You may directly ship an order to your customer by selecting a drop ship shipping method in ROES during the standard checkout procedure.  These methods are listed below the standard shipping methods.  When one of these options are selected, the next screen of the checkout will prompt you for a delivery address.

No paperwork is included with orders using drop shipping, and the return address on the box will be your own.  To your customer it will appear as though the package came directly from you.

A printed catalog is not currently available.  Because our product portfolio is expanding rapidly, it is difficult to maintain a printed catalog.  Up to date information about all our products is available on our web site.  If you have questions about a specific type of product, please contact us.

We have an unbranded website featuring all of our card products for this exact purpose.  There is no mention of Meridian, so it may be safely used to communicate product offerings to your customers.

Training for the New ROES v2014

Training for Roes

If you have used the previous version, the new ROES ordering software brings several important changes that we feel sure you will like. The Java programming will be built into the app, so installation problems and security issues should be minimized because Java will no longer have to be installed and running on Windows or Mac.

Quick Start Video ROES v2014

Quick Start — The basics of the new ROES v2014

Quick Start

In this screencast we go over the basics of using the new version of the ROES software to order photographic prints. For professional photographers who order a lot of prints, we also give a few tips for faster easier ordering, in the last part of the video.

How to Export Images for ROES

How to Export Images for ROES, from Lightroom

Questions often come up about how to move images from your camera, to your computer, then how to save them for ordering using the ROES software. In this video we go over that part of the workflow in more detail, including  suggestions for color profile, file format and specific settings in the Lightroom export panel.

Videos for the older version of ROES, which have some tips and tricks that still apply.

The user interface of the new MeridianPro ROES v8 has definitely changed. The way books and albums are entered into an order is significantly different. Packages are another area that has seen big changes. However, at it’s core it’s pretty much the same little app, so much of the information provided in these video gives tips and tricks that still apply. There’s also information given about design and layout, aspect ratio of prints, and workflow, that may be helpful. So until we find time to redo these screencast, with the new ROES user interface, we’ll keep these links posted here. As you watch them, just keep in mind that tools and buttons are similar but not exactly the same.

Download the MeridianPro ROES app install for Mac

Please note: We no longer support ROES on OSX 10.6.8. This page, with it’s download link for ROES on OSX 10.6.8, has been provided for customers running this older version of the Mac OS, but it is a step above-and-beyond our official support policy. We cannot guarantee the ROES software will run correctly on your system, nor can we offer support by telephone or email.

Though Apple has not officially dropped support of OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, it appears they are no longer supplying security updates for these older systems. Following the policies of many other companies, we have made the difficult decision to no longer officially support ROES running on any Mac systems older than OSX 10.7. The ROES software installs and runs a completely different version on OSX 10.7 and above, in fact installing Java is no longer necessary which is a welcome improvement. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes customers running older Mac hardware.

Troubleshooting

If you are unable to launch the software successfully, we may be able to help.  Please check the common launch problems and their solutions listed below.

  • NullPointerException:  If you have run the program on this computer before and the screen resolution or layout has changed since the last time, this may sometimes occur.  Deleting the Meridian3.properties file from your %userprofile%\.Meridian3 folder may help.  To find that file so that you may delete it, type this path into the address bar of any explorer window:  %userprofile%\.Meridian3

  • Unable to Launch Application:  This is typically caused by security software preventing the launch of Java applications based on Java Web Start technology.  Temporarily disabling your security software or adding an exception for Java, JavaW, and JavaWS may help.  Those files are found in this folder:  %programfiles%\Java\jre7\bin
